Queensland's Ergon Energy Flags Solar Rebate Rush
Ergon Energy's latest PV Industry Alert signals the expectation of a rush leading up to a reduction in Australia's Solar Credits rebate and is urging that IES applications be lodged soon.
From July 1 this year, the Solar Credits rebate will be reduced by 33%. Currently, the rebate offers savings of thousands of dollars on a rooftop solar panel array.
"We are expecting a significant increase in the rate of IES applications prior to 30 June 2012, when the Federal Government's Solar Credits rebate is reduced", states the bulletin. "Ideally, all applications for systems intended to be installed before that date should be lodged by Monday 30 April 2012."
Ergon says this is particularly important if the inverter to be used in a system is of large enough capacity to require a further technical assessment. Ergon has flagged that due to the volume of solar PV applications and the growing complexity of requirements, it is experiencing some technical assessment delays.
A household can install a solar power system without approval from Ergon and satisfy the requirements of the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator, allowing the creation of Solar Credits. However, as that system cannot be connected to the grid without approval from Ergon, it's considered wise to have an IES application submitted by the installation company on behalf of the owner and approved by Ergon first.
If a system should be installed prior to gaining Ergon's blessing; when the application is finally lodged, reviewed and possibly rejected for whatever reason, the household will not be able to start saving on their electricity bills
